Process design

Definition

Process design is a type of in-plant location planning in which workstations or plants with similar workflows are grouped together. The aim is to ensure that the products pass through the production stations in a sensible manner during their manufacture and, depending on requirements, are also fed to other production facilities.

At the beginning of a process design, the essential processes and workflows are determined and recorded. Then the overall process is broken down into its sub-processes in order to arrange them in a chronological order and to identify and define interfaces. The realization phase serves the physical implementation of the planning; permanent process improvements flow into it.
