Product development process (PDP)

Definition

Core (service) process of companies for the development and implementation of innovations and product ideas. The PDP requires project management to approach the defined task in a structured manner and meet the defined budget, dates, technical requirements, preconditions and quality. Project resources like product request and project overview, customer requirement specification and functional specification document, quality assessment, review, kick-off and a tight project organisation support operations in the different phases of product development.

  • Customer inquiry/Acquisition/Idea: Decision regarding project assumption, project management, initial resources, project stages, time schedule/ specification sheet containing user requirements, project kick-off
  • Product/ process concept: Implementation of the customer requirement specification into a functional specification document as a bais for the development, creation of a functional model (A-model), production planning and control, quality planning, work system concept
  • Product/process development: Production planning and preparation, work system design, purchasing and logistics, supplier selection, trial plan, creation of dummies (B-model) and release samples (C-model)
  • Introduction: testing, creation of pre-production samples (D-models), preparation of batch production
  • Batch production: monitoring of the production startup, project completion, experience documentation
