Setup time minimization

Definition

Since setup ties up capacity without adding value, efforts are made to systematically improve or reduce the setup process and effort. This is based, for example, on data collected during setup time determination. Several goals are pursued in the reduction of the setup effort: In the foreground is the reduction or complete avoidance of machine downtimes during setup (so-called internal setup), also through partial or complete relocation of setup tasks so that they can be performed without machine downtime, i.e. outside the machine (so-called external setup), in some cases also through the use of additional personnel. In both cases, efforts are also made to reduce the amount of work iernvolved, e.g. by using rapid clamping devices. → SMED
