Functional analysis

Definition

A function analysis is understood to be the analysis of the functions of a process or a product from a process engineering point of view. The function analysis can be carried out both hierarchically (tree structure) and process-oriented (time dependency). The purpose of the function is to describe the mode of operation or the tasks of a product or a process in a solution-neutral way. As a combination of workflow, time and cost studies, it thus offers the possibility to systematically identify, check and plausibilize requirements and to clarify concrete use cases.

In business management terms, functional analysis is a controlling tool and an important part of value analysis. Complex processes are broken down into individual sub-aspects and tasks, each of which is assigned to specific cost centers. By differentiating the functions and prioritizing them according to importance, targeted approaches for efficiency gains or cost-saving measures can be derived.

Steps of the function analysis:

  • List of functions including degree of fulfillment
  • Systematization according to main and secondary functions
  • Presentation of the functions
  • Weighting of functions
